Questions and Answers

What does Farmington soccer club offer?

Farmington Soccer Club (FSC) offers recreational, select and premier soccer for boys and girls in the ages of 5-18.   We have a youth program for under 8 (U8) players. The kids are split by age to form two groups: U6 (5-6 year olds) and U8 (7-8 year olds).  Both groups are coached and managed by FSC and all games are played within the club.  At the U9 age group, the kids are split into boys and girls teams and are registered under the West Suburban Soccer League (WSSL).   Under the WSSL League, the teams will be playing against comparable teams from other cities.  Premier teams are registered under Michigan State Premier Soccer League (MSPSL).

What is the difference between recreation, select, and premier?

Beginning at the age of U9, FSC offers select and premier level soccer for boys and girls. These are more competitive programs than recreation.  The teams are formed through a selection process and players are required to tryout.  Coaches are allowed to select the better skilled players to form a team.   There are 2 tryout sessions which occur the first day after the Spring season ends, normally the second week of June.  Check our website for the schedule.  Select teams who wish to compete at a higher level have the option to join the MSPSL to play Premier.

NOTE: Players not selected for a select or premier team are welcome to join our recreational program.  We try to accommodate as many players as possible.  Roster sizes must be within the limits defined below.

Do we have to go to both tryouts?

No, it is not required to attend both tryouts.  However, most kids perform better the second day.  Also, coaches normally run different drills each day to get an overall perspective of the players skills.  Although not required, it is highly recommended to attend both tryout sessions.

How are Coaches selected?

U6-U8:  Both ages are grouped coach, directed by an Experience coach, with help from parents during practices, then volunteer parents at the games.  If you would like to help out in the game, it is preferred that you volunteer  during the practice at least once a week.

U9 and above:  All coaches are selected by the Farmington Director of Players and Coaches.  A higher caliber of coaches are selected for the select and premier teams, and a possible paid trainer may be employed.

When is registration?  When are teams formed?  When does the season start?

Registration period for Fall is from June through August, while Spring is January through April.  It's typical to register for Fall and Spring season, though not mandatory.  If registering for spring only, there is a small risk there will not be any openings since teams are formed in Fall.

NOTE: The registration forms will be on our website during the appropriate registration periods.

Recreational teams are formed in August after the registration deadline.   Select and Premier teams are formed after tryouts.   The fall season begins in September and lasts through October.  The Spring season runs from April through June.  All teams play a Fall and Spring season.

When are the practices?

  • U6 teams practice one day a week.
  • U8 practices are twice a week Monday and Wednesday 6-7 pm.  You only need to attend one.
  • For ages U9 and above, practice days and fields are determined based on the individual coaches' request and field availability.  Teams normally practice 2 days a week.
  • Practices for recreation teams begin 2-3 weeks before games start.  Select and premier practices may begin anytime after the team is formed in June.

When are the games?

Each season is comprised of 8-10 games.

  • U6-U8:   Games are once a week mostly on Sat morning.
  • U9 and above:  games are scheduled by the coach or manager and can be any day of the week, but mostly on weekends.
  • The fall season for all teams begins in September.  The Spring season begins in April.

Where are the practice and game fields?

The practice fields can be any of the Farmington fields located under the <Field Locations> link on the FSC Website.  Practice day and fields are determined based on the individual coaches’ request and field availability.

All FSC Home games are played at Founders Park located behind the ice arena on 8-Mile Road between Farmington and Newburg Roards.

Is there travel involved?

  • U6-U8:  all games are played at Farmington Founders Park with the exception of 1-2 cross-city games.
  • U9 and above:  you may be required to play 4-5 games per season in a different city.  The distance travel will depend on the team schedule.  Please visit the WSSL (for select) and MSPSL (for Premier) links for a listing of the possible clubs and cities that may fall into your division.
